Tips To Keep Your Pup Cool

The hottest days of summer have arrived, or at least it certainly feels like it. Although, we aren’t the only ones sweating it out in the summer heat. Our pups are struggling just as much as we are to stay cool and hydrated. Here are the best ways you can make sure your dog stays healthy, safe, and happy this summer.
Give Them Plenty of Water
Over half of a dog’s body is composed of water, so they must maintain good hydration. Dogs need to drink about 1/2 to 1 full ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. So that’s 25 to 50 ounces for a 50-pound dog. Fresh water is best, so bring some with you – along with a bowl – if you’re going on an outing.
Take Lots of Breaks
Just like us, dogs tire easily in the sun and heat. Unlike us, they don’t have a way to communicate that they need a break. That’s why important to be proactive and make sure your dog gets a chance to rest every 15-20 minutes during leisurely walking or playing, more often if they’re doing something strenuous. While they rest, offer them some water, some shade, and a snack or treat.
Let Them Swim
Going for a swim is an obvious way to help your dog cool off. So, if you’re heading to a park choose one with a pond or creek nearby. Many parks now offer doggie pools. There’s also the option to set up your very own in the form of a kiddie pool in your backyard. Even if your dog isn’t typically a fan, they may change their mind if they find themselves getting hot enough. A life jacket is a good idea for dogs that have less experience with water. And don’t forget that swimming, while refreshing, can still wear them out. So breaks are still important.

Avoid Mid-day Walks
While dogs definitely need their exercise, it’s best to avoid doing it during the hottest part of the day if possible. Try to schedule walks or playtime for early morning or evenings to avoid overheating and dehydration.
Hang in there! It will eventually cool off again. In the meantime, take care of yourself and your furry friends!
