Do you have a vacation on the horizon? While travel is something fun to look  forward to, there are some logistics and preparations to keep in check before you can hit the road. If you’re driving, then you’ll need to make sure that your vehicle is in reliable condition for the miles ahead of you, and keeping your vehicle in top condition will help you and your passengers stay safe and avoid unwelcome surprises along the way. Follow this maintenance checklist to get your vehicle ready for your road trip.

Tires Pressure

Your tires make constant contact with the road, so they must always be in reliable condition. That’s why it’s necessary to check in on the quality of your tires throughout the year, and especially if you’re about to embark on a trip that task them with many more miles of use. Use an air pressure gauge to see if they’re properly inflated, as underinflated tires can impact your gas mileage when every drop counts. Of course, overinflated tires aren’t desirable either, as they are more prone to causing a blowout while you drive.

Tire Rotation

The front tires on your vehicle are subject to more wear and tear than the back pair, and if you never rotate them from front to back, they’ll wear out much faster. After all, they have to bear the brunt of all the friction caused during your turning and braking. That’s why it’s important to have your tires rotated on a regular basis. If you ever look at your tires and see that one side is wearing more than the rest, that could also be a sign that your suspension is misaligned. This can happen over time or whenever you experience a harsh impact with a bump or pothole, so consider having your wheel alignment adjusted before your journey as well.

Engine Oil

The engine is the beating heart of your vehicle, and it needs fresh engine oil to perform safely and reliably. As long as the engine has clean oil, it’s protected from excessive wear and tear and the dangers of overheating. However, as oil ages, it picks up contaminants that hinder its ability to protect and lubricate the engine. That’s why it’s important to have your oil changed on a routine schedule. If it’s been a while since your last oil change, make sure your engine has the clean oil it needs before you embark on your road trip.
