Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are the most advanced in electric vehicle technology. These all-electric models produce zero tailpipe emissions and eliminate the need for regular visits to the gas pumps. Their powertrains consist of at least one electric motor and battery pack, and models like the 2024 Lexus RZ allow drivers to conveniently charge their vehicle at home with an installed Level 2 charger. With a range of up to 266 miles, the RZ is great for both cruising around town and day trips.
If you’re not yet ready for a fully electric model, a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is a great middle-of-the-road option. PHEVs are fueled by both electric, battery-derived energy, and petrol. They have sufficient electric-only ranges that allow drivers to use electricity when driving through town and use gasoline when they need a longer range for road trips, or they don’t have access to a charging station. Lexus currently offers three PHEV models.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles or HEVs are very similar to PHEVs. They have a conventional gas-powered engine as well as an electric motor. The difference lies in the electric range and charging method. HEVs don’t plug in to charge. Instead, their electric power is derived solely from regenerative braking. Most don’t have an electric-only driving mode and those that do, have a very short range of only a few miles. These models are great for drivers who want a vehicle that has much better fuel efficiency and cuts down on carbon emissions but doesn’t require them to adjust their driving and refueling habits.
