How Does EV Charging Work?

Charging your electric vehicle (EV) is pretty simple– you just plug it up! Some shoppers find the idea of switching to an EV intimidating because it’s such a new experience. The last thing you need in your life is to add complications to your routine. Rest assured, driving an EV is easy, accessible, and fun.

Let’s go over the three different types of EV charging options: Level 1 (120 volts), Level 2 (240 volts), and Direct-Current (DC) Fast Charging. We will discuss when and where each method of charging is typically found and how much power it gives your vehicle.

Level 1

When you go home with your new EV, you will have a portable charger that fits into your vehicle and your basic wall outlet. Level 1 is a 120-volt power cord, which aligns with basic home power output. If you have a garage, when you get home, you need only to plug your vehicle into the nearest outlet to charge overnight. This method gives off a pretty weak amount of power, so you can expect around 40 miles of power from an 8-hour charge. This is convenient if you just expect to commute nearby. This is also the lowest-cost charging method.

Level 2

At 240 volts, you are getting a little more power from this method. Homes typically also have this power outlet available. It is usually used for larger appliances like a dryer, refrigerator, or oven. If you need to install an outlet near your vehicle, hire an electrician to do the job. It’s fairly simple and won’t break the bank. These Level 2 chargers can also be found at public charging stations. While it is a more powerful charging agent than level 1, it is not great for traveling long distances.

Direct-Current (DC) Fast Charging

This method is by far the most powerful and costly method of charging. DC charging stations are typically found along highways and at public charging stations. You can get anywhere from 100-300 miles worth of driving power from a 30-minute charging session. It’s as easy as stopping for a quick break on a long drive– much like you would stop at a gas station.
